Driving Instructor

Driving Instructor

Some Advice when searching for a Driving Instructor …. Remember that often paying less will get you less

Here are the top ten qualities your Driving Instructor should demonstrate to ensure that your Driving Lessons are a success.

  1. Patience: – It is imperative that your Driving Instructor is patient with you, you will need somebody that can put up with the mistakes that you will inevitably make whilst learning to drive.
  2. Reliability: – Your Driving Instructor is not your friend. You should expect your Driving Instructor to arrive on time, in a suitable vehicle and in a reasonable frame of mind for your Driving Lesson.
  3. Punctuality: – Very Important, you want a full Driving Lesson. It is very frustrating if your Driving Instructor constantly arrives late for your Driving Lessons.
  4. Honesty: – You will in some cases pay in advance for your Driving Lessons. You must be able to trust your Driving Instructor to deliver those Driving Lessons once you have paid for them.
  5. Opinionated: – Defined in the dictionary as being, ‘obstinate in your opinions’. This is clearly a positive character type for an approved Driving Instructor. There would be no value having a Driving Instructor who wavered in their opinion and at the end of your Driving Lesson when you are being debriefed by your Driving Instructor you will need open and honest feedback as to what you stronger Driving skills and the worst Driving faults are. Your Driving Lessons are not a democracy. You are here to learn to drive.
  6. Diplomacy: – Your Driving Instructor has to offer a good balance; if they keep upsetting you during the course of your Driving Lesson you will feel unhappy and frustrated. You need positive reinforcement and encouragement throughout you course of Driving Lessons with them.
  7. Studiousness: – A good Driving Instructor is always on the lookout for ways to improve their performance. Including; better maybe, or different ways to explain things to you through to totally new approaches to age old problems. This is an evolving subject area where you and your Driving Instructor will learn some things together.
  8. Restraint: – Your Driving Instructor will need to demonstrate this. You are young and clever and your Driving Instructor knows nothing, you know more than he or she. Your Driving Instructors opinions on things other than your Driving Lessons and you learning to Drive, do not matter
  9. Self control: – Your Driving Instructor has dual controls, they should not keep their feet twitching above them all the time this will unsettle you and make you feel that you are having wasted Driving Lesson. Caution is good but they should not overdo it.
  10. Discipline: – Your Driving Instructor should demonstrate a level of personal discipline in making certain that the car and themselves are always ready for your Driving Lessons. They should show professional discipline by making sure that they always give you the best quality Driving Instruction they can give you even when they don’t feel like it no matter how good the reason.

When asking any Driving School for their prices, please remember to also ask the following questions:

  • How reliable is the Driving Instructor? Will he or she turn up on time every time?
  • What is the Pass Rate of the Driving instructor?
  • Is their licence current and valid? And can they produce it for you to see?
  • All fully qualified DSA registered instructors are periodically required to renew their registration with the DSA. The expiry date is clearly shown on their licence. There are many people out there instructing illegally…. please make sure you check!
  • Will you be fully insured whilst driving?
  • Is the Driving Instructor fully insured to allow Provisional Driving Licence holders to drive their car? Can he/she produce an insurance certificate to prove this?
  • If your Driving School Car breaks down what arrangements are there in place to ensure your Driving Lessons or Driving Test are not affected?
  • Do they piggy back? – Some Driving Instructors use part of a pupil’s Driving Lesson to collect their next pupil.  - Do you really want to be a taxi driver?
  • How much time will you spend parked up listening to your instructor talk (or watching him/her smoke)?
  • Can the instructor produce for you confirmation that he/she has had a Criminal Records Bureau check carried out on them? – This is for your protection. The DSA insist that all instructors are subject to a CRB check in order to verify their suitability to being a driving instructor.

Intensive Driving Course

Crash courses and Intensive Driving Lessons

Most of us naturally assume that taking an Intensive Driving Course of say one week is the quickest way of passing your test – it is not and in reality, can take longer than by taking our 6 week Intensive Driving Course.

The main reason for this is that you would ideally want a Driving Test at the end of your course and due to the fact that we cannot book the Driving Test until you have passed your Theory Test we cannot book the course until you have passed this test. So we have to wait for a couple of weeks for your studies and then apply for the test. Only when you have your pass certificate can we book the test – which currently has a 6 to 8 week lead time.
So the whole process will usually take a minimum of 8-10 weeks.

However in the event that it is speed you are interested in!

▪   You should apply for your Driving Theory Test today

▪   You can start taking all available lessons from tomorrow

▪    As it usually takes 2 weeks to study & pass your theory test you will probably be able to complete enough lessons to get you to test standard by the time you passed your Theory Test.

▪ It is recommended that you apply for a “Short notice” Driving Test which will often come through within a day or so.

It is possible to pass within 3 weeks with this approach

If you still like the idea of taking an Intensive Driving Course then please read on – as we have both Intensive Driving Courses and Structured Driving Courses

Intensive Driving Courses or Crash Driving courses – normally require 5 hours per day and can be taken over 2, 3, or 5 days.

The 5 day Intensive Driving Course lasts for one week, start on Monday and finish on Friday and we will book your test for the week following your Intensive Driving Course, 2 and 3 day courses work in a similar way where we will try to book your test on the day following your Intensive Driving Course.

What are the drawbacks for this type of course?

▪    In the event that feel ill or unwell we cannot re-arrange the course because the instructor will have already committed that time to you and we will not be able to arrange other work with such short notice.

▪    You will probably not learn as much, hour for hour as you would in a series of standard Driving Lessons, due mainly to the additional pressure that you will be under.

▪    During the course of any series of Driving Lessons you will find that on some of your Driving Lessons you will progress more than on others. This is natural but you should consider, how you would feel if the day before your test you suddenly started to make a real mess of things. Neither you nor your Driving Instructor would have the time left to rebuild your confidence prior to your Driving Test

Our preference is for less pressured courses:

The 6 Week Intensive Driving Course – Consists of a course of 2 to 3 Driving Lessons per week usually spread over a period of 6 to 9 weeks (this is dependent on the Driving Test lead times in your specific area). We will book your Theory Test for you at the beginning this is so you will be studying at the same time as taking Driving Lessons. The Intensive Driving Course can be designed as a beginners Intensive Driving Course but it is strongly advised that you book an assessment Driving Lesson in the first place so that both you and we can get an accurate idea of how many lessons you will actually need.
The Intensive Driving Course cost includes the following:

▪    The cost of your Theory Test

▪    The cost of your Practical Driving Test based on a weekday test fee

▪    16 One hour lessons – that can be booked for either during the day or evening

▪    Also included is your pre-test Driving Lesson and the use of our car on your Driving Test

The main advantages of this course are that if you do not make the progress required then together we have the time for additional Driving Lessons before your Driving Test.

10, 15, 20 or 25 hour courses – Driving Lesson packages these are usually taken at the rate of 2 hours per day leading up to your Driving Test. The decision as to which package is the right one for you is taken together with your Driving Instructor after your assessment Driving Lesson. This type of Driving Course will include the hours as selected in addition to the cost of us booking your Driving Test and a pre-test Driving Lesson and use of our car on your Driving Test.

Other stuff

We are based in Billericay and cover the surrounding areas of Hornchurch, Romford, Rainham, Upminster, Dagenham, Stratford,Barking and more. Driving Lessons Billericay Driving School is a wholly independent chain of Driving Schools offering both Manual and Automatic Driving Lessons.

Driving Lessons Billericay Driving School welcomes, and caters for pupils of with any level of driving experience and ability who are seeking to take Driving Lessons.

Additionally we off Driving Lessons with an Automatic Car, some people ask why?  Automatics are becoming more and more popular for multiple reasons.  Some people want or need to pass their Driving Test quicker and whilst we cannot guarantee this, we can confirm that it is easier and quicker to learn to drive in an automatic car.

For some of us we find it simply too difficult to use the gears and clutch in a manual car as well as everything else that we have to do when learning to drive. This is not uncommon and an automatic car allows the pupil to focus more on their road skills rather than the controls of the car.

It is sometimes pointed out that if you learn to drive in an automatic car you are limited to driving only automatic cars for the rest of their driving career.  On the other hand most of those people who already drive automatic cars would argue that they have no wish to drive manual, including many who have learned to drive in a manual car.
